How film was used as propaganda?

8 Jun

There are three main propagandas that were and still are the press, radio, and films. The biggest one was the film. It was a big one because people would watch the films. It was also a big one because it would promote what was going on in America. One big thing that the film was used as a propaganda was for the World War II. Many say the government worked with Hollywood to promote the war in films and use it as a propaganda.

The films were a powerful tool for the government to promote the war. To bring this into action, the government, set up two major institutions. Those two institutions were that the Office of War Information regulated what information about the war was released, and second was if the films would help win the war. The movies that were released during this time showed grim images, anti-Japanese propaganda, and took the viewer into the depths of the sacrifices that American soldiers suffered through. So they all would see what was going on during the war.

In the end, they used the films to promote many wars that were going on. They also used it to promote many other different situations that the government was facing. That is how the film was used as propaganda.

What causes movies to raise there view?

How does the movie industry use social media?

1 Jun

There are a lot of social media that movie industry uses. A movie industry uses billboards, advertisements, and even Internet. Social media is changing the way movies are promoted.

The Internet website such as Facebook makes the movie industry go viral threw the Internet. It brings consumers closer to connect with movie studios. Facebook helps consumers engage the audiences to the movie or even to buy tickets online.

The other viral rise of the Internet website would be YouTube. You Tube is known for a social networking site. You tube can help you put a commercial up on it website or have an advertisement on there and it going viral. Having everybody see them on the Internet.

Billboards are another way to promote consumers to go to watch their movie or even to buy their product. While it’s on the freeway a lot of people look at billboards everyday giving ideas to look at a product or to watch a movie.

Social media is used everyday not only threw movies, but threw other products that get people interested in seeing or purchasing. Movie industries put a lot of money and time into social media.

The Movie Industry and Technology Progress

1 Jun

This year the movie industry made $30 billion from box-office revenue. But the total movie industry revenue was $87 billion. Where did the other $57 billion come from? (From sources that the studios at one time claimed would put them out of business such as video rentals, DVD sales, digital downloads etc.)

The technology produced a new market far larger than impact it had on the existing market. Especially for the movie industry had great opportunity to make people to spend hard-earned money to sit in a crowded, darkened room with complete strangers. In 1940’s, the movie studios had to divest their distribution channel – they owned over 50% of the movie theaters in the U.S. In 1950’s, the broadcast television was free; the threat was cable television. Studios argued that their free television content could not compete with paid. In 1988, the MPAA; lobbying arm got congress to pass the Digital Millennium Copyright Act(DMCA), making it illegal for you to make a digital copy of a DVA that you actually purchased.

Today it’s the Internet that’s going to put the studios out of business. How will they going to put an action next?

Make-up vs CGI

25 May

Make-up and other special effects have become an integral part of movies.  Even films that seem to have no effects and clean-faced actors will use digital touching-up and hours of applying make-up to the actors to make them look perfect.

Despite what cynics may say, traditional prosthetic make-up is still extremely common in movies.  It is the most realistic way to add blood, grit, scars, or simply change the texture of the skin since it is a physical, temporary alteration to an actor.  It is also still used to create monstrous or unusual features that still leave most of the face human, such as in Hellboy or Captain America’s Red Skull.  Time-wise, even the seemingly simplest and most ‘every day’ looking movie make-up without prosthetics will require at least an hour of application, and with a prosthetic it can take between two and four hours minimum.

CGI has lifted many of the restrictions that were held formerly in place by the limits of make-up, the capabilities of the human body, and physics.  It also allows for filming scenes that would otherwise require waiting for perfect conditions of weather or a large amount of camera trickery.  It is also often used with make-up to touch up edges, or give it a finishing touch.  If not used directly to the make-up and actors, it can be used to apply filters and lighting effects after filming that can easily be removed, reversed, or changed.  CGI also allows for stunts to be performed without potentially endangering actors or ruining props.

Make-up is often much cheaper than cgi, however with the rise of HD, mistakes or simple tricks that used to appear realistic will appear cheesy and fake.  It is also limited by the proportions and physical capabilities of the actors it is being filmed on, not to mention that large body prosthetics and suits can be heavy and bulky and severely restrict the movement of an actor leading to compromise between the ideal result and what is possible.  Some people prefer the look of prosthetics to CGI believing it to look more natural or ‘right’ next to ‘normal’ human actors and the portion of the audience that is turned-off by CGI is a part of the cost of heavily using it.  A CGI model takes a long time to make, but doesn’t need to be re-made each day and filming can occur without the model being completed since it is often added in after the fact.  The end result would look more consistent since it wouldn’t have variations in the painting and application between scenes filmed on different days.

The positive and negative incentives of both make-up and CGI seem to cancel each-other out for the most part, and which should be used depends on the situation and what is attempting to be accomplished.  Often times the best choice that would minimize the cons of each while taking advantage of the strengths of both involves a combination of the two.  Both fields are constantly improving techniques, technology, and working together to create even more life-like and realistic effects.

How much does an executive producer make yearly?

25 May

There are many people that work in the movie industry but the only ones we hear talked about the most are the famous actors and how much they get paid. We really don’t hear about about any other people that get paid a lot of doing their jobs in the industry like the executive producers. An executive producer is the person who discovered and bought the literary property that the film is based on. The executive producers make at least a six-figure salary annually.

As of 2008, the executive producers median of an annual salary was $64,430. Also as of 2008, the middle 50 percent earned was $41,890 to $105,070 on average. Film executive producers in New York and California are the ones that earn the highest salaries with averages between $90,545 to $169,768 and an annual average salary of $120,530. In the motion picture industry, an executive producer secures at least 25 percent of the film’s budget.

In the end, executive producers make enough money to to keep there business going. Also, they make enough money to keep the movies coming.

What determines the most profitable movie of all time?

25 May

The most profitable movie of all time was or is a Paranormal Activity. With only %15,000, this movie was created which took in a worldwide gross of almost $197 million, a staggering percentage return over 655,000%.

A profitable movie as I mentioned about the Paranormal Activity doesn’t just do well at the box office. The most profitable movies are based on world wide box office receipts. Toy Story 3, for example, was the highest-grossing movie of 2010 so far with a worldwide take over $600 million. However, its budget was $200 million, which mean it has only made three times its investment. Even the Titanic, the second highest-grossing film of all time, could only make a 900% return on its budget.

To find the most profitable movie of all time, you have to skip over such movies as The lord of the rings,Pirates of the Caribbean,Harry Potter. The most profitable movie is not even in the top ten highest grossing movies of all time.

Films as a Force for Good

18 May

Many people are quick to critisize the movie industry for glorifying violence, but film can also bring to light social issues or show them from a new perspective.

In the year 1962, America was still divided on the issue of civil rights.  James Meridith was fighting to be enrolled at the University of Mississippi, and the year before had brought the Freedom Riders.  Another event of 1962 was the release of the film version of To Kill A Mockingbird.  While not without its flaws, it helped to bring even more publicity to the civil rights movement.

Today films have begun to show more and more characters relevent to the current social issue of gay rights.  Movies like The Kids Are Alright, and television shows like Modern Family show increasing support and acceptance from the media.

But do movies and shows actually have any potential to sway public opinion?

Big screen’s affect on people

18 May

The movies often raise important issues and thereby make us think, and they often raise those issues in strong and memorable ways. Because of their typical combinations with voices, images, and musics affect people on many different levels. They appeal not only to our minds but also to our emotions.

Many scenes from many movies are appeared as strongly into the people mind years after watching them. It may come as various way depends on the type of movies. By decreasing the number of movies which contains non-violence or acetic as several years before, people could easily contact with more aggressive and violent movies. The words and the way they speak in the movies are easily influenced to people while they are unconscious or not.

Unfortunately as I said earlier, most of movies and TV contain plenty of violent scenes now days. My best friend, Chris, can function as a fair example. He never fought with other classmates before watching a violent fighting movie. After watching that series for several months, he had a strong inclination to use physical violence to others since he thinks fight is cool. As a result, nobody wants to friend with him as well as alienates him because of his impoliteness and rudeness. Therefore, it was The Street Fighters that made his personality totally changed.

Furthermore, most of movies contain too many biases. According to the special report of National Advertisement Committee, 80 % of movies and shows include too many sex, violence, and race biases. In other words, if we do not control the time of exposing to those harmful influence, what will stop us from having a prejudice toward women, the poor, and foreigners?

What follow is a list of the most profitable movies of all time?

What are the costs and benefits of being an actor?

18 May

There are many costs to entering the acting business, which often outweigh the benefits.  Actors and actresses have many responsibilities before they even audition for a movie.  They must take time outside of the time they spend on set to read scripts and meet with their agents and other professionals before they receive a role.  Actors must research their character and work with other actors to perfect their role in the film as well.  For most people in this profession, it is very difficult to find steady work and only a select few actors and actresses achieve recognition as stars.  Often times, actors have long periods of unemployment between roles and must find other jobs to make a living.

When actors have finally landed a part in a movie the stress is not over.  Actors only held around 66,500 jobs in 2010, according to the United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics.  Many of these jobs have a very stressful environment.  Many actors work under a lot of pressure to perfect the role and they often have much anxiety about finding their next job.  For example, after the filming of Dark Knight Heath Ledger was found in his room unconscious, after an accidental overdose on many anxiety medications.  Actors are constantly looking for more acting jobs because most assignments are short term and most actors do not make a good profit.  The median hourly wage of actors in May of 2010 was around $17.44.  This means that roughly half of actors earned less than that.  The lowest ten percent of actors earned less than $8.58 an hour.  Hours are also long and can be irregular.  Many people in the acting field are forced to work evenings, holidays and weekends when in the middle of a movie production.

Although there are many costs to the acting profession, there are also many benefits.  To become an actor or actress, advanced education is usually not needed.  This means those who strive to enter to acting field can save a lot of money that others are spending in universities and graduate schools.  By attending community college or acting conservatories, actors are able to gain experience without spending hundreds of thousands of dollars.  In addition, actors are always learning how to be better.  Those who enjoy learning will benefit from learning something new every time they obtain a new role.  For example, many actors are able to learn a new skill and gain more human capital by acting as a person who must sing, dance, or play a musical instrument.  Those who are able to learn quickly make a better profit as an actor.  When an actor receives a better part they are able to have much better wages.  In 2010 the top ten percent of actors were earning more than $64.04 per hour.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of actors is expected to grow four percent from 2010 to 2020 which is a bit slower that most occupations.  The strong demand for new movies will cause the need for actors to increase slightly.

Are there more benefits in the field of producing and directing films than there are in acting?

Besides selling movie tickets, how do movie theaters make a profit?

18 May

Movie theaters receive most of their profit from selling movie tickets. However, in order to further increase their profit, movie theaters offer their customers other goods in addition to their ticket. Specifically, theaters offer popcorn and candy in order to gain a larger profit.

In 1905, nickelodeon theaters were introduced across the United States. By 1907, about 3,000 theaters opened their doors and by 1914, these theaters were filled with the 27% of Americans that went to the movies each week. These theaters attracted concession stand workers to sell their goods to moviegoers. Though independent from the theater, the concessionaires would sell their candy and popcorn to consumers at the movies. At first, theaters refused to offer concessions at their theaters. Looking down on the concessionaires, theater owners were concerned that selling food at their theaters would degrade the theater’s value. Theater owners were looking to keep the cinema an upscale environment that serviced the elite. In order to distinguish themselves from lower grade shows, movie theaters elected to not sell food.

It wasn’t until the Great Depression that theaters agreed to sell snacks at their theaters. In an effort to gain more profit during the hard economic times, theaters offered consumers snacks and concessions. Theaters made popcorn accessible to the general population, selling a portion to each costumer for nearly ten cents. This price allowed for some of the poorest Americans to purchase the snack.

In the late 1940s, television became a direct competitor of the movie industry. Allowing families to stay at home and enjoy their favorite television shows, television caused movie attendance to decrease by 50 percent. Losing a portion of their consumers to television, movie theaters became more aggressive in selling popcorn. At the close of World War II, sugar that was being rationed during wartime became available to the public. Theaters used this influx of sugar to introduce more snacks such as Goobers, Sno-Caps, Chuckles, and Black Crows as well and the still popular Junior Mints and M&Ms.

With the success of their food sales, movie theaters increased their profits. Allowing the theater to become a place that sold more than movie tickets, the movie theater became a culture that appealed to many people. In attracting a wider consumer market and providing consumers with more options for purchase, the movie industry was able to expand the success of their business.

What other amenities have increased theater profit?
