The Movie Industry and Technology Progress

1 Jun

This year the movie industry made $30 billion from box-office revenue. But the total movie industry revenue was $87 billion. Where did the other $57 billion come from? (From sources that the studios at one time claimed would put them out of business such as video rentals, DVD sales, digital downloads etc.)

The technology produced a new market far larger than impact it had on the existing market. Especially for the movie industry had great opportunity to make people to spend hard-earned money to sit in a crowded, darkened room with complete strangers. In 1940’s, the movie studios had to divest their distribution channel – they owned over 50% of the movie theaters in the U.S. In 1950’s, the broadcast television was free; the threat was cable television. Studios argued that their free television content could not compete with paid. In 1988, the MPAA; lobbying arm got congress to pass the Digital Millennium Copyright Act(DMCA), making it illegal for you to make a digital copy of a DVA that you actually purchased.

Today it’s the Internet that’s going to put the studios out of business. How will they going to put an action next?

What determines the most profitable movie of all time?

25 May

The most profitable movie of all time was or is a Paranormal Activity. With only %15,000, this movie was created which took in a worldwide gross of almost $197 million, a staggering percentage return over 655,000%.

A profitable movie as I mentioned about the Paranormal Activity doesn’t just do well at the box office. The most profitable movies are based on world wide box office receipts. Toy Story 3, for example, was the highest-grossing movie of 2010 so far with a worldwide take over $600 million. However, its budget was $200 million, which mean it has only made three times its investment. Even the Titanic, the second highest-grossing film of all time, could only make a 900% return on its budget.

To find the most profitable movie of all time, you have to skip over such movies as The lord of the rings,Pirates of the Caribbean,Harry Potter. The most profitable movie is not even in the top ten highest grossing movies of all time.

Big screen’s affect on people

18 May

The movies often raise important issues and thereby make us think, and they often raise those issues in strong and memorable ways. Because of their typical combinations with voices, images, and musics affect people on many different levels. They appeal not only to our minds but also to our emotions.

Many scenes from many movies are appeared as strongly into the people mind years after watching them. It may come as various way depends on the type of movies. By decreasing the number of movies which contains non-violence or acetic as several years before, people could easily contact with more aggressive and violent movies. The words and the way they speak in the movies are easily influenced to people while they are unconscious or not.

Unfortunately as I said earlier, most of movies and TV contain plenty of violent scenes now days. My best friend, Chris, can function as a fair example. He never fought with other classmates before watching a violent fighting movie. After watching that series for several months, he had a strong inclination to use physical violence to others since he thinks fight is cool. As a result, nobody wants to friend with him as well as alienates him because of his impoliteness and rudeness. Therefore, it was The Street Fighters that made his personality totally changed.

Furthermore, most of movies contain too many biases. According to the special report of National Advertisement Committee, 80 % of movies and shows include too many sex, violence, and race biases. In other words, if we do not control the time of exposing to those harmful influence, what will stop us from having a prejudice toward women, the poor, and foreigners?
